Overall Fishing Conditions:

In-between the downpours and floodings the fishing is & has been on fire.  The Winter Steelhead are in most if not all the rivers, and as soon as the waters drop into shape it's going to be fish-on! everywhere.  The weather reports are calling for moderate to heavy rains for another day or 2, then after that it looks likes things may settle down for a while.  We shall see.

Where to fish in Washington

As mentioned above, I believe just about all the waters will be holding fish as soon as things settle down.  When I fish Washington I always look for the following...

The Cowlitz River.  Like last year the Cowlitz should be having another outstanding season.  Look for bag limits to increase.  The Kalama is always a favorite but to date I have not heard anything great concerning the winter run.  I do know it's been out of shape more often than not.  The Lewis, and E. Fork of the Lewis also is a popular go-to spot.  I know on the fork the stretch of Lewisville to Daybreak has alot of driftable and fishable water.  And last but certainly not least...the Washougal River.  I think this could be one of the most beautiful Rivers around here, and possibly heavily overlooked.  Drifting and bank access available here too.

Fishing in Oregon

Although I love fishing the Washington waters, being a native Oregonian I do tend to favor the rivers here.  Or maybe I've just spent more time fishing down here.

Down here there are numerous options to get into winter Steelhead.  I would start with the Wilson...hands down.  Every year I believe this river outshines every other.  With a broodstock program 2nd to none.  Can you tell it's my favorite?  Other rivers putting out fish (when in shape) are the Trask, Necanicum, NF Nehalem, Nestucca, and close to Portland Sandy River.

Trout Fishing

More to come on Trout fishing as I find out more.

What to use for Bait

All the basic methods will catch you Steelhead.  My method of choice may vary depending on water color and conditons, but under normal conditions it goes as such...
Drift fishing or if I'm in a boat drift fishing/side drifting both with a corky and yarn.  If that's not producing I'll switch things up a bit and go with eggs.  If still no luck I'll then break out for bobber and jig.
